Monroe Walkability Plan: Your Voice, Your Streets, Your Community

Monroe is a community that thrives on connection, and we believe that starts with walkability—the ability for everyone to safely walk to work, school, the grocery store, or their neighbor's house. That’s why WalkSafe Monroe is launching the Monroe Walkability Plan: a community-driven effort to make our streets safer, more accessible, and more walkable for everyone.

What is the Monroe Walkability Plan?

The Monroe Walkability Plan is a comprehensive approach to improve the streets, sidewalks, and intersections throughout our city. We’re not just imagining what Monroe could look like—we’re putting it into action with a plan that brings together community input, local businesses, city leaders, and planning experts to create safe, connected spaces for pedestrians, cyclists, and anyone navigating our city on foot.

The plan will:

  • Identify key areas where sidewalks, crosswalks, and infrastructure need attention.

  • Work with the city to develop specific projects and initiatives that align with local priorities and ensure that every Monroe resident has access to safe walking routes.

  • Engage with the community to gather ideas, insights, and feedback through surveys, forums, and mapping tools, making sure the voice of Monroe’s residents is at the heart of the planning process.

Why Do We Need It?

Right now, too many parts of Monroe aren’t safe to walk. Some neighborhoods are separated by busy streets without sidewalks, forcing pedestrians to walk on the road. Others have inaccessible crossings or poorly lit areas that make it dangerous to walk at night. The Monroe Walkability Plan is the solution we need to transform our city into a place where walking is safe, accessible, and pleasant for everyone—from families to workers, to seniors and people with disabilities.

This plan is about creating connections—not just through roads, but by building a more connected, sustainable, and vibrant Monroe. A Monroe where our streets are safe enough for kids to walk to school, workers to commute by foot, and neighbors to meet at the local park.

How You Can Get Involved

The Monroe Walkability Plan isn’t just a proposal—it’s a call to action. We’re inviting you, the community, to join us in shaping this plan.

  • Take the survey: Share your thoughts on where sidewalks, crosswalks, and other pedestrian infrastructure are needed the most in Monroe.

  • Join our task force: Help us organize, plan, and advocate for the plan’s key initiatives.

  • Stay informed: Keep up with updates, attend events, and learn about the progress of the Monroe Walkability Plan.

Together, we can create a Monroe where every step is safe—a place where walking isn’t just an afterthought but a choice. The Monroe Walkability Plan is about making Monroe a city that works for all of us.
